Award-winning content company Wisebuddah has won the commission to make BBC Radio 2’s first long-running rock series, hosted by Johnnie Walker. It is just one of a raft of commissions which the company has recently won from BBC Radio.
Johnnie Walker’s new rock series will be broadcast on Monday nights from 9pm-10pm, drawing on the Radio 2 audience’s deep love of rock music in its many and varied forms, and Johnnie Walker’s experience at the helm of the scene for decades. The commission is for 26 shows, broadcast in two series of 13 programmes.
Adam Uytman, Head of Contentsays: “Johnnie has a wealth of experience in the field of rock. The BBC Radio 2 audience are huge rock fans and have been waiting for this moment. We’ll be covering the classics – from Led Zeppelin to Guns n Roses , Red Hot Chili Peppers to Muse – as well as new bands and artists, too. We’re proud to be building on our relationship with both BBC Radio 2 and Johnnie Walker to create this new show for listeners.”
Wisebuddah have been working with Johnnie since 2009 on his current Sounds of the 70s programme. This new rock show commission was won under the tender process to bring new shows to the network, announced in January as part of BBC Radio 2’s schedule changes. Series 1 starts on 18 June. As part of this process, Wisebuddah has also won the contract for Sounds Of The 80s, with Gary Davies as its new presenter. The weekly show is accompanied by 10 BBC Red Button specials which take the show onto the TV screen, featuring the decade’s most entertaining videos and new, star interviews.
Sounds Of The 80s will continue to feature the very best music from the 1980s: hits, classics, album tracks, 12” singles and rarities. It remains on Friday nights (10pm to midnight). Gary Davies’s new show begins on Friday 18 May, when he takes over the show’s slot from Sara Cox.
Wisebuddah’s Niki & Sammy’s Peachy Podcast for BBC Radio 1 launched in February this year with an initial 12-part run. In this on-demand show, twin YouTube stars and presenters Niki and Sammy Albon celebrate their passion for music and discuss internet trends and gossip. The 25-year-old Albons launched their YouTube channel (200,000 subscribers) in 2013, and have appeared as guests and presenters on The Brit Awards, The Voice UK, the BBC Music Awards, and many more. BBC Radio 1 have commissioned Wisebuddah to make another series of 12 episodes, which will run on from the current series.
Wisebuddah also continues to grow its footprint on BBC Radio Asian Network, where it has won the commission to grow the very popular Panjabi Hit Squadto two shows a week. Wisebuddah have produced Panjabi Hit Squad since 2012, working with award-winning DJs Dee and Rav to bring listeners the biggest hip hop, Bollywood and bhangra anthems. The additional show will be broadcast from 18 May.
“Wisebuddah has built its reputation on working with great talent,” adds Adam Uytman. “We’re proud to be working with some of the UK’s most iconic presenters as well as developing shows with exciting, emerging stars. These commissions also demonstrate our ability to work across the full spectrum of audio – from traditional to new audiences and traditional to new platforms. Audio-on demand is a fast-growing area for us and it draws perfectly on our experience of producing some of the best quality shows for BBC Radio.”
